you as this second term begins for president barack obama. all the events live as they happen. that's where we're giving you a front row to today. >> here's a look at some of what you can expect during the course of the day today. the president, the first family, the vice president and his family are all attending a church service this morning at saint john's church. we saw them arrive there about 20 minutes ago live. after that, there will be a tea which is sponsored by the joint congressional committee on inaugural ceremonies. the president takes the oath of office just before noon. this is a ceremonial oath. he officially took the oath yesterday as was required by law. after that, there's a congressional luncheon and then the parade. >> live team coverage for you. sarah simmons is live

at the white house. wisdom martin is catching up with all the people. lauren has everything you need to know about today's parade. >> we want to begin with our own tom fitzgerald. he is live on the west front. >> reporter: good morning to you and allison. as we were looking down the national mall as the sun is now up, we're able to see we can see you down there from your vantage point overlooking pennsylvania avenue. for the most part here, the crowd on the west front as begun to fill out fairly nicely at this point. we arrived here shortly after 5:00 a.m. this morning when most of the media folks here were allowed to begin on to the grounds. one thing we noticed quickly as for all the preparations underway up here since october when they drove the first nail into the platform, many of these seats

were still being set up as we came up in here this morning. you are seeing a mix of different kinds of configurations. these seats up front, these are ticketed. many are vips. they are invited guests of the president or members of congress. behind that, there are standing areas up here. areas next to some of the tree lined areas where you are able to have lines take in the ceremonies. the podium is where the president will be taking the oath of office. that particular podium, they have a word for that. they all that the blue falcon. the podium you see white often at news conferences. that is the official presidential podium. the reason they call it the blue falcon is because everything in

the white house the president himself and even the dog has a code name. that is the blue falcon. it is the official presidential podium. in just about let's say three hours from now president obama and the chief justice of the united states will be saying the oath and president obama will unofficially of course because he started yesterday take his oath of office for his second term. send it back up the street to you. >> all right, tom, thank you very much. >> want to get -- check in now

with wisdom martin. >> nope, we're going to talk about the luncheon. >> may i borrow your script? >> you certainly may. >> thank you so much. after today's swearing in , the president, the vice president and their wives will attend the inaugural luncheon today. here's a look at what's on the menu. they will be having steamed lobster with new england clam chowder sauce, hickory grilled bison and apple pie. this year's menu highlights american agriculture. and thousands are making their way to the national mall now to claim their spot for a chance to witness the swearing in ceremonies. >> now we toss it to wisdom martin. already been making friends down there. he is on the national mall with a look at some of the people coming to witness history. the second inauguration of president obama. >> reporter: good morning to you tony and allison. been a busy day. people have been coming far from near.

they brought props with them. they have a very interesting story. tell us your name and how you are connected with your doctor. >> my name is dr. connie davidson. i am from oakland, california. >> let me help you with the flag here. i have worked with this school and student teachers at this school. and so i work there and my daughter works at the school as the art teacher. so her children put this together to say congratulations to barack obama. >> you didn't come last time? >> no, i didn't. the day after the election and i was on my computer and i said if you don't go now you are never going to go. i made the reservations and called her and told her she was going. >> let me see what her response was since you got her the job she was going to go to this. tell us your name.

>> my name is christine davidson. >> and your mom hooked me up. >> she's one of the best moms in the whole wide world tchlt she said do you want to come to washington? >> i mean do you see to go see barack obama? of course i want to come to washington. i don't have any money. she said don't worry about it. >> that's very nice. >> she's a good person. >> why is it important for you to be here? >> i am. with my mom and the kids i teach. it's important they know this is something they have to pay attention to and really respect. we had a mock election when it happened and everything voted for barack obama then. this is the reason why we are all here and can be here today. and it's from her live learned this privilege. when they see this, that's great. if not, i can share this with her for the rest of my life. >> very cool. this is a nice poster. you don't have cold weather in oakland. >> last week it was colder in

week. a little morning sunshine. temperatures in the mid 40s and the cold stuff gets in here tonight. might kick off a snow shower as does that front arrives later today. here's a look at your 7 day forecast. i want to emphasize how cold it's going to be. tuesday, wednesday and even into thursday with overnight lows in the teens. all right. that's a look at weather. tony and allison, back out to you guys. >> all right. tucker, thank you so much. >> today is the national holiday honoring dr. martin luther king jr.. a wreath ceremony was held on sunday for the civil right's leader. among the dignataries on hand, jesse jackson, jamie foxx and chris tucker. the dr. king inauguration weekend, an intersection of history.

>> the first family's busy day has already begun. the president, the first lady and their two daughters left for church at saint john's. >> sarah simmons has our coverage from the other end of pennsylvania avenue and tell us what we can expect to see. she's overlooking the parade reviewing stand at lafayette park. >> reporter: that's right. we're here right behind me is where the president will be sitting to view the parade as it comes through. here you can already see we have a lot of people already showing up taking their spot here to watch the parade as well. what a wonderful place to be able to watch it. his president will be in his glass enclosed heated area viewing the parades. it wasn't until the late 1800s actually that the parade that

followed the swearing in ceremony was where most of the pomp and circumstance happened. it was before the late 1800s it was the precession and leading up to the swearing in where the bands and military regimens were present. as you mentioned, it's been a very busy morning already. if we can take a look right now at some of the video, this was the president and the vice president and their families heading in to saint john's church. this church known as the church of presidents because it has a long tradition with presidents from the past worshipping on inauguration day. after that, they will then move back here to the white house. scheduled to have tea within august url committee before they proceed up to the capitol for the swearing in. we will continue to follow things here. send it back to you. >> thank you very much.

inauguration day, the whole world respects the democracy of the united states including canadians. over 200 years people have decided who is going to govern them except by other more extreme means. the feisty democracy here in the united states and poignant on martin luther king jr. day. he is an american hero but for the world he represents the fight against inequality and for tolerance. it's a special day. >> the relationship between the americas is an important one. there's focus on mexico and some of the problems there. but the relationship between the united states and canada, a unique one highlighted by the motion picture argo going back in history and talking about some of the things that happened between the two nations. talk to us a little about

historically the importance of this relationship. >> well, we had a disagreement in the war of 1812. since then, we've been allies on every major conflict whether it's the first world war, the second world war. today we have soldiers that were involved together in libya. we now have military personnel that we pray for that are serving in afghanistan. and when we look at situations in syria and iran, united states and canada are allies. our goal was a great way for people to appreciate we have each other's back. can't beat a hollywood movie. it was a great night with our ambassador who put his life on the line for our american friends. >> got to ask you about fun you are having here.

welcome back, when president obama takes the oath of office today, he will have his hand on a bible which special significance. it's the one that president abraham lincoln took the oath on back in 1861. president obama also used it during his last inauguration. the lincoln bible will be on display at the library of congress from january 23rd through february 18th. today the president will also use a bible that belonged to dr. martin luther king jr.. >> very historic bibles there. pretty amazing. pretty good moment in history there we have a front row seat for. happy to be here today covering the 57th presidential inauguration. lauren is at freedom plaza today. she is having a different vantage point of today's ceremony down there with the folks ready to see the parade when it goes by later today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm happy to be

here as well particularly since the sun came out. want to talk about the history of the inaugural parade. the first one taking place for the first president george washington back in 1789. that was held in new york. the first inaugural parade here was in 1801 for thomas jefferson. the first to ever be held on tv, that was for president truman in 1949. charlie was called in to work the parade. in 1956 he was called back in to announce for president eisenhower. and charlie has since announced every inaugural parade. his favorites were president kennedy and regan's parade. will be the

lead announcer today. and president obama chose from the heart which seems evident in the theme. among the floats in the parade today, there is one honoring that theme and the 8 citizen co-chairs selected by the obama administration will be riding on it. lily is one of those. >> the idea was to have 8 people represent achievements of the first four years. goals that he has for the second four years. to be here to witness this is again, words don't describe it. we're humbled by the entire experience. we're so honored and overwhelmed with excitement. >> lily is a single mom. she works two job s and through pel grants and financial aid, her son is going to be able to attend college as well. some of the others of those co-chairs, there is a wounded warrior who is a recipient of the purple

to talk inauguration trivia. there's so many fun facts, if you will about inaugurations over the years. you were telling us a couple things. first televised inauguration. >> harry truman. first inauguration to stream live on the internet bill clinton 1997. first radio dialled back to the 1920s calvin coolage. >> when they couldn't actually be here. >> they would have heard something different before franklin roosevelt. franklin roosevelt was the first president to initiate the repetition of each line of the oath after the chief justice gives it. before that, they went through the entire oath and the president would say i do. >> very interesting. i did not

know that. >> we also saw that president obama will put his hand on the lincoln bible, also a bible used by dr. king. what's the history of that? >> well, all but three presidents have put their hands. the three are john quincy adams who put his hand on a book of laws. and calvin coolage and franklin. it was accustom not to put your hand on a bible. so only three. >> what i didn't know and i don't think i knew nor did i see happening where the hand is. that is all very thought out too. >> right. everything is a message during the inauguration. beyond the speech. for example, the first inaugural parade to

have african american was abraham lincoln in 1865. the first to have women marching was woodrow wilson. the people are thinking through the symbolism of the event and what they want to communicate to the country. >> younger people may think that the inaugural ceremonies always took place on the west front of the capitol and that's only during recent times. >> only 32 years old. ronald reagan shifted it . he wanted to look out toward his native california. but before that it was on the east front and a very different view. so to go back and look at the pictures before 1981, very different pictures from what you have today. >> anything stand out to you we can expect this time around? >> this has been a contentious few years for the president. he's going to articulate not policies but principles.

and try and find a way through roderick toitgie them the language, the words to unite people. the most important thing in a really good inaugural is making a phrase memorable. pass the torch to a new generation. it's not what the country can do for you. with malice with charity toward all. you think back to those memorable lines. that's how you frame the way a country looks at its politics. and the speech writer and the president himself want to find ways to structure the way americans think about politics. >> there were some who say there was no particularly memorable line from the first inauguration. we'll see what happens with this one. thank you very much. we'll talk to you later on in the morning as well. >> and stay with us. our special coverage continues . .

all right. here we go with a live look at saint john's church in northwest washington. where right now the first family and the family of vice president biden are attending a church service that began about i'm going to say about 50 minutes ago. this is customary as

many of you know on inauguration day for the president or the incoming president.. >> to talk about michelle obama is very substantive. we also talk a lot about her wonderful style. and i have just received hot information about what the first lady is wearing today. so as we wait their departure i'd like to tell everybody she is wearing a navy tom brown coat and dress. the fabric was developed based on the style of amen's man's silk tie. cardigan designed by reed kurcoff and necklace by cathy waterman. there video of the first couple waiting for their daughters coming over before they went

into the church. and jay crew shoes on the first lady. >> very down to earth in many ways. >> the first daughters have come into their own style. malia is wearing a jay crew ensemble. the beautiful purple. and sasha is wearing a kate spade coat and dress. we talked about the let's move to get healthy initiative the first erved as a style icon.ed out. and there we see the vice president and dr. jill biden not looking too shapy themselves. >> our sarah simmons has the view from the white house of the first family. we're looking at video of the first family and the vice president go into the church and sarah, i know i'm not alone in waiting to hear what the first lady was hearing today. that was for us today. >> reporter: oh, yes

. very excited to talk about the red carpet arrival there at saint john's and the first lady looking lovely as always. let's talk more to give us inside as to what is happening inside the church. the president and first lady and vice president sitting in the front row is what we're hearing from inside. and the church was full as you would expect for such a big day like today. the church choir sang at the very beginning and as we mentioned before, dr. lewis leon led the service giving a special welcome to the vice president and the president and the first lady. making mention this church had been used every time for the first inaugural. we are waiting for them to be finishing up their service soon to come back to the white house before they will head back or head to the capitol from here. we are hearing the president is tweeting this morning. he loves to dochlt the tweet that is

we wanted to come back and show you the live pictures at saint john's church. the church service has wrapped up and momentarily we should see the president. the president has come out. he's in the car. they will be leaving the church in just a couple moments to return to the white house. >> from there, they will go back to the white house and a short time later, they will again leave the white house in route to the capitol where the swearing in will take place. that should happen just a little before noon today. so you can

see they are running pretty much the schedule. the church service was cut short but they appear to be leaving now. and you hear the crowd. >> this is the second presidential motor cade. as you said, they are running close to time. they are a little ahead of time which bodes well for the day's activities. a lot scheduled to take place today. and the fact this is wrapping up on time or early should indicate we are on schedule for everything else during the course of the day today. >> as the events unravel and unroll, we will be right here to bring every moment to you as we cover the ceremony today. there is a live look as far as i can tell near the -- not sure what that would be. the route there the short distance to the white house. maybe it's my

imagination and i'm not sure how people know what's going on but i seem to hear a roar of excitement as the president makes these moves. >> there you go. you can hear it. every time the motor cade goes past a group of people you do hear the cheers rise. sarah simmons is going to join us. we're used to this in washington. you see the motor cades for town. for a lot of the people come to town, it's exciting to see the cars go by. >> reporter: it certainly is. for the crowds would have gathered cheering as you can see the motor cade coming back to the white house. awesome we'll be on any given there. there's the motor cade that goes by. and you kind of forget. kind of nice to be here and experience this and see some of the folks. but to be able to catch a glimpse of the president or vice president coming into the white

house back here of course for the rest of the day's events that will follow. it's fun to experience it through their eyes and hearing their excitement and cheers just reminds you how special of a moment this is and how special a day in all that this is for all of us the inauguration day, tony and allison. >> yes, we're seeing the vice president there and dr. biden exit the limo. if they stick to the schedule today, should be about an hour or so until we see the president and the vice president leave the white house heading back to the capitol. there's that second limo pulling up there. >> it's interesting. we're talking about the excitement of people seeing all this. when i worked in new york for several years, president bush would come

to new york every now and then. and in new york city people would grumble about it. but for most people it's thrilling to see all of this. >> you see the first daughters there. greeting their parents. and again, the first mother in law there. always there really offering a sense i would imagine of family and home and normalcy for the first daughters to have the first lady's mom there with the first family. >> it was very important to the first lady and to the president to have the first lady's mom with them in the white house. what's going to happen now is while they are in the white house, there's a tea that will be held with members of the joint commission on the inaugural ceremonies. there will be a tea there during the course of the next hour or so. just about exactly an hour and

well, there will be plenty of star power at this morning's events. beyonce will be performing the national anthem. kelly clarkson will sing after president obama gives the address. and james taylor will perform after vice president takes the oath of office. that's a little different from

the last time around when they were 10 balls. set to make appearances at those balls, mark anthony, nick cannon, smoky robinson and last night hours after being sworn in for a second time, the president and vice president celebrated for a reception in dc. the president thanked many donors for his support and talked about the future. >> a lot of stars from the entertainment world descend on washington for big events like this. the inauguration and also the festivities that surround the inauguration and our next guest has been in party mode all weekend joins us now with the details. brendan is the senior contributor. you know this is your second appearance with us and we appreciate you sticking around. >> absolutely. >> and talking about all of the

festivities. so i think we ended it last time with what happens after the pomp and pageantry. we're talking about the balls and gaylas. really scaled back. >> i think the white house decided they don't want to fall into pitfalls. very focused on what the policy sies. there's two balls. people just really to set a patriotic tone. one is going to be the commander-in-chief's ball. it's all focused on the military. there's going to be so many military officers and their families to come out to celebrate. and they are going to be there to spend time with the president and just put a really america spin on the evening. and we're seeing live

pictures there as we talk. you gave us basically pictures of past inaugurations. we want to take a look at those now. starting with the president that some might draw similarities to this president. a youthful president john f kennedy representing a new era. this is old for president obama now. but just looking back at the first lady and john f kennedy in their tails and beautiful gown. >> president kennedy was young and vibrant and everyone talked about how his wife was an energetic woman. she's fashionable and here she's going to be wearing a great tom brown dress today and accessories from jay crew. she's just got her hair changed. got these bangs and everyone is talking about

she looks sassy and much younger. everyone is so excited to see someone who wants to take on more than just the traditional quiet first lady roll. she compliments the president so well. >> we're you canning about hollywood on the potomic and they met up close and personal. we have a picture here of the former president regan we want to show to you now. what was it like in that washington? it was a blending of two worlds. >> president regan was an actor. we need to remember that. he was very close with a lot of people in the hollywood sphere. and so when he was inaugurated, frank sinatra came out. he saw the rat pack coming in and wanted to rub elbows with ronald reagan. people in california loved regan. he was a governor and actor and cowboy on screen.
